Renowned director Abel Ferrara recently revealed that he will be filming a biopic about the Catholic Capuchin priest, stigmatist, and saint, Father Pio, with Shia LaBeouf cast in the lead role. Ferrara's long-time friend Willem Dafoe will also appear in a role. Ferrara stated in an interview, "We are preparing to shoot a film about Father Pio, focusing on Italy after World War I. Father Pio has now been canonized as a saint and is a famous stigmatist. He lived during a tumultuous period in world history, and before becoming a well-known saint, he was a young monk, a role that will be played by Shia LaBeouf." Ferrara mentioned that filming will begin at the end of October in the Apulia region of Italy. This is a more ambitious project than any of his recent works and has been years in the making.
