In the West of Wyoming, USA, the taciturn farmer Ennis (played by Heath Ledger) and the outgoing cowboy Jack (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) are sent to the mountains to tend sheep, where human presence is rare and they are accompanied only by the flock, leading a monotonous life. On a frigid night, under the influence of alcohol and hormones, they engage in an act "they shouldn't have done," and thus spend the best moments of their lives on Brokeback Mountain. When the seasonal grazing ends, pressured by societal expectations, Jack and Ennis reluctantly part ways to marry and have children. Ennis marries Alma, whom he has known since childhood, and they have two lovely daughters; Jack moves to Texas, where he thrives in his career, supported by his wife Lureen's family, and has a son. Although they are truly fond of each other, they can only meet periodically each year. Alma, who is aware of the situation, suffers immensely, and they find it impossible to endure being together for only a few days a year. Then an unexpected event occurs...
