Once Parker picks up the puppy, he can never put it down again, and eventually, his affection for Hachi sways his wife, Kat (played by Joan Allen), who initially strongly opposed having a dog. Under Parker's care, Hachi grows up, accompanying him to the station when he goes to work and waiting at the station for him to return home. Hachi's loyalty endears him even more to the families in town. One day, Hachi acts unusually just as Parker is about to leave for work, playing a game of fetch that he had never played before. Parker is delighted by Hachi's behavior, but it is on that very day that Parker passes away from illness. With heavy hearts, Parker's wife, daughter Andy (played by Sarah Roemer), and son-in-law Michael (played by Robbie Sublett) bury him. Unbeknownst to Hachi, he still waits faithfully at the station every evening at five o'clock, anticipating his owner's return...
