Lao Gu (Gu Baoming) leads the police to dismantle a thief's den. The only girl who escapes by jumping out the window, Shu'an, has a broken leg and is taken to the hospital by a passing boy, Xiao Qiang. After returning home, Shu'an is locked inside by her mother and, feeling bored, makes prank calls, one of which goes to a woman named Zhou Yufang (Miao Qianren), pretending to be Zhou's husband's mistress who is pregnant and wants to negotiate. Zhou Yufang has been married to Li Lizhong (Li Liqun) for seven years; her husband is a law-abiding man who works in a hospital. After getting married, she quit her job to write at home. The anonymous call deeply unsettles Zhou Yufang, causing her to lose confidence in life, while the reappearance of her old lover, Shen Weibin (Jin Shijie), gives her hope, leading her to temporarily leave Li Lizhong, and her novel also wins an award. The separation causes Li Lizhong much distress, and later he finds out that his wife's departure was just due to a phone call. He is eager to explain, but it doesn't work, and in the end, he takes a risky move…
