The Night of San Lorenzo is a night when shooting stars cross the sky, and wishes come true. A woman recalls a long time ago when a group of farmers fled through the Tuscan countryside to escape the Nazis, and the sky was not filled with stars, but with flashing gunfire. The film presents a series of events and characters as seen through the eyes of a 6-year-old child: On the night of August 10, 1944, a village must choose between succumbing to the violence of Nazi fascists and fleeing to the American-occupied zone. Due to differing moral views, educational backgrounds, and class differences, divisions arise among the villagers. Some decide to escape with Calvano, while others take refuge in the village's only church with the bishop. The next day, German troops suddenly arrive in the village, conducting widespread searches. Those who did not escape are shot, and the church is bombed, while those who fled with Calvano are eventually rescued by the Americans.
