Writer Takaji Sugimoto (played by Masakazu Tamura) puts tremendous effort into crafting his novel "Distant Memories," which receives high praise from Hattori (played by Shirō Sano), the cultural minister of the Kanazawa Daily News. Consequently, he eagerly hopes to extend the serialization of his work. To devote himself fully to this project, Sugimoto relocates from Tokyo to Kanazawa. During this time, a woman named Yoshiko Shiota (played by Ryoko Hirosue), residing in Tokyo, writes to the newspaper office expressing her desire to subscribe to the Kanazawa Daily News in order to read "Distant Memories." To verify the existence of this reader, Sugimoto's assistant (played by Ami Mizukawa) pays a visit, but the woman's behavior leaves her quite puzzled. Not long after, Yoshiko unsubscribes, citing that the novel is boring. As the serialization reaches its climax, Sugimoto finds this matter rather strange. Perhaps Yoshiko is not interested in the novel itself, but in a certain event that occurred in Kanazawa during that time... This film is adapted from the work of the famous Japanese mystery writer Seicho Matsumoto.
