The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and tells the story of a military court trial involving a Army lieutenant. Strictly speaking, this is a genuine mutiny; according to military regulations, "under exceptional circumstances, the captain's command can be revoked without superior approval." When the USS Caine faces the danger of sinking due to Captain Queeg's erroneous command, his loyal first officer, Maryk, swiftly takes control of the ship. As a result, Maryk and his supporting colleagues face a strict military trial. The only way for his lawyer to save him is to prove that Captain Queeg is mentally unstable and unable to properly command the ship.
