Lawyer Erin (Laura Linney) takes on a case. A priest is being sued for using religious methods—the exorcism ritual—to treat a severely ill girl named Emily, causing her to miss the correct medical treatment time. In court, a battle between religion and science unfolds. The incident begins with the terrifying experience of 19-year-old college student Emily (Jennifer Carpenter). While sleeping in her dorm, she feels an evil spirit invade her, followed by a series of increasingly horrifying events. Emily behaves strangely; her eyes darken, and she lives in the nightmare of being tormented by demons, unable to control her will, suffering so much that she feels like she wishes for death. Her family brings in a psychiatrist, but there is no improvement. In desperation, they call a priest (Tom Wilkinson) to investigate, only to discover that Emily is possessed by six ancient demons. With the demons plaguing her, the only hope of escape is through the exorcism ritual. However, the priest's exorcism does not save Emily and brings accusations against him. Atheists argue that the idea of possession is nonsense.
