During the Tokugawa shogunate, the executioner Bai Yidao (played by Masakazu Tamura) was highly trusted by the lord. However, the Yagyu clan, led by Yagyu Bizen (played by Ko Hiratsuka), coveted power and viewed the skilled Mizuho-style swordsman Bai Yidao as a formidable enemy. On the eve of a formal match, Bizen schemed to frame Bai Yidao, leading to the murder of his wife, Chiji (played by Yuko Kotegawa).
