Mary (played by Sandra Bullock) is a crossword puzzle creator who is smart and beautiful but socially awkward. Concerned about her future, her parents constantly arrange various blind dates for her. Initially hopeless, Mary finds herself smitten with the handsome and talented Steve (played by Bradley Cooper). She talks endlessly about her crossword work, but Steve, who finds it boring, makes excuses to get away from her. During a coverage of a mining collapse, Mary falls into the mine and accidentally discovers a boy who has been left behind.
