Charlie (Harvey Keitel) and his Italian immigrant friends hang out in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, lacking stable jobs and making a living working for the mafia. Charlie's friend Johnny (Robert De Niro) owes money to a black market dealer, Michael, but is unable to repay it and is constantly being pursued for debt. Charlie is genuinely in love with Johnny's cousin, Teresa, but she hopes he can leave this unstable life and seek a new beginning. Michael becomes furious when he cannot collect his money from Johnny, and Charlie promises to help settle the matter by ensuring Johnny pays him back soon. In a bar, when Michael realizes that Johnny is utterly broke and cannot repay a dime, a fight breaks out between the two. An uncontrolled Johnny pulls a gun on Michael, forcing him to retreat. To avoid Michael's retaliation, Charlie, Johnny, and Teresa decide to hide out in the countryside. While driving to see a movie, they are chased by a car, which turns out to be Michael; he pulls out a gun and opens fire on their vehicle. The car flips over, and the injured trio struggles to crawl out, facing the endless darkness while letting out hopeless cries.
