Yumiko (played by Shiyezi) is dreaming of a bright future; she is pregnant and is about to be transferred to the US Embassy with her husband, Hiroshi Eda (played by Yoshio Tsuchiya), who works at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. However, a sudden disaster destroys everything. Eda accidentally dies in a car accident, and the court rules that the incident was caused by force majeure, exempting any liability. Yumiko harbors deep hatred for the driver, Shiro Mishima (played by Yujiro Ishihara). She rejects Mishima's request for a visit and compensation, undergoes the painful decision to terminate her pregnancy, and returns to her hometown Aomori to work in her sister's inn for a living. Mishima is transferred from the Tokyo headquarters due to the accident, and his girlfriend of many years leaves him. Feeling guilty, he regularly sends compensation money to Yumiko. Soon, the two meet again in Aomori—one unwilling to look back at the past, the other seeking forgiveness. Two deeply wounded souls slowly come together… This film is the last work of director Mikio Naruse.
