Ali (played by Forest Whitaker) and his mother are survivors who escaped a horrific ethnic genocide. Despite now being the head of the Major Crimes Unit in the Cape Town police department, memories of a bloody and terrifying childhood continue to haunt him, leaving an enduring shadow. Brian (played by Orlando Bloom) is Ali's subordinate; his family members were once radicals in the apartheid movement, but this has not affected the trust and friendship between him and Ali.
