During World War II in the South Atlantic, the American destroyer USS Haynes tracks a German submarine signal using radar, prompting Captain Muller (played by Robert Mitchum) to initiate a pursuit. Muller, originally a cargo ship captain, was reassigned to the Haynes after his previous ship was sunk by a torpedo, and his crew consists largely of new recruits. German Captain Stenberg (played by Curt Jürgens), skilled in naval combat, is tasked with meeting a raider to retrieve British codes, and thus he steadfastly maintains his course but is ultimately detected by Muller, who follows him. Fearing a failure to receive reinforcements and being surrounded by the German fleet, Muller bombards the area with depth charges every hour while waiting for aid. The German submarine is forced to the deep sea floor to evade pursuit, but the relentless attacks from the American ship overwhelm the German crew, leading Captain Stenberg to rally their spirits with a march, which inadvertently makes them detectable to American sonar for further bombardment. The Haynes also suffers heavy damage, as Muller pretends to abandon ship to lure the German submarine to the surface, intending to bombard it and create a collision between the two ships…
