Louis (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) is an aimless petty criminal who spends his days engaged in various petty crimes. One day, he accidentally witnesses the work of a freelance photographer and sees an opportunity to make money. He purchases camera equipment and, by listening to police radio, arrives at crime scenes ahead of the authorities to capture footage, which he sells to morning news producer Nina (played by Rene Russo) for profit. After tasting success a few times, Louis recruits Rick (played by Riz Ahmed) as a partner to "expand" his business. Gradually, ordinary accidents or fire scenes no longer satisfy Louis and Nina's appetite; they crave more gruesome, explosive, eye-catching news scenes. To secure exclusive footage, Louis is even willing to get his hands dirty.
