Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) arrives in Los Angeles from New York to see his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), whom he hasn't seen for six months. He is invited to a Christmas party on the 30th floor of a building. However, a group of criminals targets the building's vault containing over 600 million in government bonds. They lock down the building and take the partygoers hostage. McClane narrowly escapes and single-handedly engages in a fierce battle with the criminals
