The film consists of three short stories - "Magic (Less Real Than Magic)", "The Open Door", and "Again". The multiplicity and reflectiveness of female characters are themes present in Hamaguchi's previous works, and this is also true in his new film "Coincidence and Imagination". His earlier works "Happy Hour" and "Asako I & II" have a distinct literary feel, while "Coincidence and Imagination" can be regarded as a collection of short stories. The narrative rhythm reinforces this impression: three segments, each focusing on a female character, further divided into three acts. The three shorts tell a story of an unexpected love triangle, a failed temptation, and a meeting arising from a misunderstanding. Although disjointed, they maintain an organic narrative flow, even emphasizing it. Despite most of the action taking place in a single space and featuring only two actors, the film does not feel like a play. This is not only due to the dialogue but also because of its complex concepts of time and space, with the final segment almost turning into science fiction. The moments we witness are connected to poignant universal destinies, marked by choices, regrets, deceit, and coincidences, which are the true protagonists of the film.
