The young and aspiring scientist Shurik Dimoferyev is wholeheartedly conducting scientific invention experiments at home, repeatedly causing power outages in his apartment. Comrade Ivan Vasilyevich comes to represent the voice of the people to complain, but instead gets pulled into the inaugural experiment of the newly invented time machine. Meanwhile, the gentleman thief Miroslavsky happens to encounter the two involved in the "close-distance inaugural" time travel while breaking into a dentist's office. After a series of mishaps, the three of them travel back to the palace of Ivan the Terrible in ancient Russia, causing the Tsar, thinking a demon has arrived, to flee in panic. In the chase led by Shurik, they escape into the modern era, while Comrade Ivan and the thief remain in ancient times, pursued by guards. Amid the chaos, the time machine gets accidentally damaged. Due to his resemblance to the Tsar, Comrade Ivan reluctantly follows the thief's suggestion to impersonate "the Terrible" and interact with others... On the other hand, the Tsar stays at Shurik's home, undoubtedly creating a series of misunderstandings and chaos...
