Ray Ferrier (played by Tom Cruise) is divorced from his wife, and their two children live with her—this family is so shattered due to his carefree irresponsibility and neglect. A disaster caused by an alien invasion, however, brings them back together, allowing them to rebuild their close relationship. On a day when his wife is busy, Ray has to take care of the kids. The weather is dark and stormy, and everything seems strange. Sure enough, a massive three-legged spacecraft rises from the ground, and evil Martians invade this previously peaceful town. People flee in all directions, and Ray runs for his life with his daughter, embarking on a life-or-death adventure. Authorities try everything to deal with the aliens but fail repeatedly, plunging the entire world into panic. Instinctively finding his paternal love, the normally careless father becomes brave and determined, and protecting his children becomes his driving force and belief.
