The story is adapted from Mara Leveritt's novel of the same name, based on the true events surrounding the "West Memphis Three." It recounts the horrific murder case in Arkansas in 1993: on the night of May 5, 1993, three 8-year-old boys went missing in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, and three "bad youth," Jessie Misskelley Jr., Damien Echols, and Jason Baldwin, were identified as suspects and imprisoned for 18 years. In August 2011, after 18 years in prison, the "West Memphis Three" were released. Reese Witherspoon plays the mother of one of the victims who initially believes in the police investigation but gradually starts to doubt the fairness of the case as it unfolds. Colin Firth portrays a private investigator who has always supported the defendants and listed critical evidence through his investigation. He provided free support to the defense and faced various insults as a result.
