At the docks of New York Harbor, the mafia led by Johnny ruthlessly oppresses the dockworkers. Terry (Marlon Brando), a former boxer, comes to the docks to work for Johnny. His friend Joey is pushed off a rooftop by Johnny's henchman, Charlie, who is also Terry's brother, for testifying against Johnny and others to the crime commission. Joey's sister, Edie (Eva Marie Saint), vows to avenge her brother and investigates with Father Barry. Witnesses are too afraid to come forward. Terry also witnessed Joey's murder; despite his sympathy for Edie's plight and wanting to help her escape from mafia persecution, he does not report his brother's crime. After spending time with Edie, they gradually develop feelings for each other. When Edie discovers Terry was an accomplice in her brother's murder, she rejects him.
