In the early 20th century, Bill (played by Richard Gere) was originally a factory worker who had to leave the factory after getting into a fight. He left Chicago with his girlfriend Abby (played by Brooke Adams) and his sister Linda, finding work harvesting wheat on a farm in Texas. Bill and Abby pretended to be siblings. A young farmer (played by Sam Shepard), who is also the owner of the farm, is attracted to Abby, while he discovers he is suffering from a terminal illness. To steal the landowner's possessions, Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer. Unexpectedly, as they spend day after day together, Abby also falls in love with the farmer. On the other hand, the unusual relationship between Abby and Bill greatly displeases the farmer. Consequently, Bill leaves the wheat fields. After a while, Bill returns, and the farmer finally loses his patience and approaches Bill with a gun... The film won an Oscar for Best Cinematography and received nominations for Best Costume and Best Original Score.
