The grand master specializing in the writing and binding of Buddhist scriptures has received approval from the court to have independent operating rights. Although his identity is that of a merchant, he has been granted the right to bear a prestigious surname and enjoys a prominent status with abundant wealth. The grand master, Iparu (played by Eitaro Indō), is miserly and unwilling to part with even a penny, being especially stingy towards his wife's (played by Kyoko Kagawa) family. On the other hand, Iparu is infatuated with the maid Ayumi (played by Yoko Nitta) and harbors ulterior motives. Ayumi, feeling cornered, lies and claims that she has already gotten engaged to the painter Shobey (played by Kazuo Hasegawa). At a critical moment, the brother of the grand master’s wife encounters financial difficulties and his brother-in-law refuses to help, leaving her in a difficult position. Shobey steps in to help by raising funds, which raises Iparu's suspicions... This film won the Best Director Award at the 1955 Blue Ribbon Awards.
