This film tells the poignant story of Shiori Ito, a 29-year-old Japanese journalist who claims she was raped by Takayuki Yamaguchi, then president of the Tokyo Broadcasting System's Washington bureau and biographer of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, during a work dinner in 2015. Mr. Yamaguchi has strongly denied this allegation. Despite reporting to the police, they asked Ito to recreate the alleged rape with a life-sized doll, and the case was dismissed after a year-long investigation. When Ito made the unprecedented decision to publicly disclose her accusations and reveal her identity, she faced public humiliation and hate mail. The film uniquely documents Ito within a year of its release. While the global MeToo movement inspired women worldwide to widely share their allegations of sexual assault, the response in Japan was relatively calm. Ito was unbowed; she visited institutions that she felt had failed her and met with other women who were afraid to speak up. The film intertwines Ito's story with the broader societal context in Japan, where until 2017, the minimum sentence for rape was shorter than that for theft.
