The story takes place in an immigrant community in the United States, where Serafina (Anna Magnani) and her husband Rosario (Larry Chance) lead a peaceful life. Tragedy strikes when a car accident claims Rosario's life, leaving Serafina and her daughter Rosa (Marisa Pavan) to rely on each other.
