The 37th (1964) Academy Award-winning Best Picture "My Fair Lady" received thirteen nominations and won eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography (Color), Best Art Direction (Color), Best Costume Design (Color), Best Sound, and Best Adaptation. The flower girl Eliza Doolittle, beautiful and clever, comes from a poor background. She sells flowers on the street every day to support her family. One day, her low-class accent catches the attention of linguist Professor Higgins, who boasts that with his training, the flower girl can become a duchess. Eliza sees this as an opportunity and approaches the professor for training. Higgins’ friend Pickering bets him that if Eliza can attend a garden party hosted by the ambassador six months later without revealing her true identity, he will cover all expenses for the experiment and Eliza’s tuition. This ignites Higgins' competitive spirit, and he eagerly accepts the challenge. He starts teaching her from the most basic phonetics. Higgins is an energetic and scientific scholar who can devote himself wholeheartedly to any topic of interest. He is open-hearted and carries no malice, but he trains Eliza rigorously, like a child who shows no regard for others' feelings. One time, when Higgins takes Eliza to his mother’s dinner party, the young gentleman Freddy is deeply impressed by Eliza’s beauty and eloquence, falling in love at first sight without recognizing her as the dirty flower girl who sold him flowers in the rain before. Higgins, in his forties and unmarried, has never been interested in young women, but he finds himself reliant on Eliza for daily life, with his clothing, meals, and appointments all managed by her. However, what frustrates Eliza is Higgins’ rude temperament. He teaches her polite language but never treats her with the same courtesy. Six months later, Higgins confidently takes Eliza and Pickering to an ambassador's reception. Eliza attends as Colonel Pickering’s adopted daughter, and she puts forth her best effort, speaking with poise and grace. When she appears, conversations stop, and people admire her captivating presence. She interacts skillfully, and Higgins’ first student, Nepomuck, fails miserably when trying to impress Eliza. Higgins succeeds. However, once back home, Higgins neglects Eliza’s exhausted presence, focusing instead on celebrating their successful bet with friends. Hurt pride compels Eliza to leave Higgins' house. At the door, she encounters the lovestruck Freddy, who has been lingering outside her window every night, silently caring for her. Eliza is touched by his devotion. Despite Higgins’ temper, he cares for Eliza genuinely, and in her anger at leaving, he becomes distressed. He goes to his mother’s house to find her, but they get into another argument. Eliza declares she will marry Freddy, which shocks and angers Higgins, prompting him to leave in a fury. Yet en route home, he cannot suppress thoughts of Eliza. Alone at home listening to recordings of her, Eliza returns! She still loves Higgins!
