Frank (played by Robert Mitchum) is an ambulance driver. One day, a woman named Catherine (played by Barbara O'Neil) boards the ambulance Frank is driving due to carbon monoxide poisoning. This is how Frank meets Catherine's daughter, Diane (played by Jean Simmons), a beautiful and intelligent girl. Frank quickly falls in love, and Diane seems particularly enthusiastic about him. Before long, Frank quits his job to become the driver for Diane's family. As time goes by, Diane's unusual behaviors and the eerie atmosphere in her home make Frank start to doubt her innocence; she is not as carefree as she appears. Just when he wants to escape this enormous whirlpool, he realizes there is nowhere for him to flee.
