The defeat at the Battle of Midway directly announced the failure of the Japanese army in the Pacific theater, yet the stubbornly resisting Japanese soldiers continued to hold their ground at the southernmost small island of Japan—Iwo Jima. This seemingly unremarkable little island witnessed the fiercest battles in the Pacific during World War II. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (played by Ken Watanabe) is the commander of the Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, responsible for this final line of defense. General Kuribayashi vigorously reforms the entrenched practices and shortcomings of the Japanese army and devises a comprehensive strategy focused on delaying the American forces. Although he and twenty thousand soldiers are united in purpose, Kuribayashi knows that facing the forty thousand American soldiers with overwhelming air superiority means this will be a war with no turning back. Before the final battle, Kuribayashi wrote his last letter home...
