A shepherd from Corinth saves an abandoned baby and offers him to a childless king. Time passes, and the baby grows up to be called Oedipus (Franco Citti). One day, a witch tells Oedipus the myth of Apollo, revealing that he will one day kill his biological father and marry his biological mother. Upon hearing this, Oedipus decides to wander. Along the way, he gets into a fight and accidentally kills an old man, who turns out to be his biological father. He then continues his wanderings to Thebes, where he kills a monster with the body of a man and the head of a beast, and marries the queen, Jocasta (Silvana Mangano), becoming the new king of the land, who is also his biological mother, making Apollo's myth come true. Soon, Thebes is plagued by a disease, and the people search for the murderer of the old king; Oedipus finally learns the whole truth.
