The story takes place in the border area between the United States and Mexico, where various violent gangs operate year-round. Batty (played by Chris Marquette) has a father who is a police officer responsible for managing the area, and being a police officer here means facing the constant threat of death. One day, Batty witnesses his father being attacked by a gang and dying before his eyes. In his anger, the young man vows to take revenge for his father and ultimately does kill his enemy. Batty also has a younger brother, Jacob (played by Anton Yelchin), and after their father's death, Batty becomes Jacob's only support. Batty works desperately to earn money just to support Jacob's violin studies and eventually send him abroad for further education. Years pass quickly, and when Jacob finally returns after completing his studies, he finds that his brother Batty has already changed beyond recognition.
