The story is set in the present, where the mutant population has suffered an unprecedented devastating blow, rooted in Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) assassinating Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) in 1973. After learning that Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) is using her time-travel abilities to help Blink (Fan Bingbing) and other allies escape the giant robot Sentinels, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) come to an agreement and decide to send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back to 1973 to find the young Professor X (James McAvoy) and young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and convince them to work together to stop Mystique's actions. Thus, Wolverine embarks on a journey back to the past, but whether fate can be altered remains uncertain.
