July 4th is not only America's Independence Day, but also the big day when mob lawyer Joe Morse (played by John Garfield) is set to rise to power! Understanding the public's tendency to bet on the illegal lottery number 776 (the year America was founded, 1776), he collaborates with mob boss Ben Tucker to manipulate the lottery results, intending to bankrupt multiple underground banks and monopolize the entire underground lottery business. However, his brother Leo Morse is the owner of one of these banks, and for the sake of money and fame, Joe is willing to coerce his brother into illegal activities. As he digs deeper into crime, can Joe, who understands the public's psychology, also grasp his own fate? "Force of Evil" incorporates a significant amount of real-life footage from New York and tells the dark side of humanity in a big city through the illegal lottery story in just over seventy minutes. With powerful cinematography and polished dialogue, the theme of crime, an essential element of film noir, is unmistakable in this movie. This film is highly praised by Martin Scorsese, who considers it one of the crime movies that had the greatest impact on him.
