In India during the 1930s, women had no human rights or freedom; they existed merely as male subordinates. An 8-year-old girl, Chuyia (played by Sarala), becomes a widow at a young age, forced to shave her head and spend the rest of her long life in a courtyard designated for widows. In this courtyard, there are young women who seem like celestial beings, frail old women half-buried in the dust, and cruel women scheming to earn unjust wealth. What will Chuyia's tomorrow be like? What future awaits these suffering women? This film is the third part of Indian director Deepa Mehta’s "Elements Trilogy," which won several awards, including Best Film at the 2006 Bangkok International Film Festival; three awards at the 2006 Genie Awards in Canada for Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Actress (Seema Biswas); Best Performance at the 2006 National Society of Film Critics Awards; Young Jury Prize at the 2005 Valladolid International Film Festival; Best Actress (Lisa Ray) and Best Director at the 2006 Vancouver Film Critic Awards; and Best Young Performer Award (Sarala) at the 2007 Young Artist Awards.
