The story takes place in 16th century Spain, during a time when Spain and England are fiercely engaged in a war with no end in sight. The captain of the English fleet, Richard (played by Lyn Harding), and his son Michael (played by Laurence Olivier) are captured by the locals. However, Richard is an old friend of the Spanish Navy Admiral Vardes (played by Charles Carson), who takes Michael to his home while Richard tragically dies under enemy fire. In Vardes' home, Michael meets Vardes' daughter, Cynthia (played by Vivien Leigh), who harbors feelings for the handsome and capable Michael. Yet, Michael, still filled with rage towards the enemy, returns to England to pledge loyalty to the Queen. Later, Michael goes undercover in Spain, disguising himself, and is placed in the home of Hillary (played by James Mason) at the King's request, only to unexpectedly encounter Cynthia, who has now become Hillary's wife.
