Jason is the son of King Aeson, whose brother Pelias usurped the throne. Jason was raised by the centaur Chiron. After growing up, Jason returns to the kingdom to reclaim his throne from his uncle. His uncle demands that he complete a task — to obtain the Golden Fleece; if Jason succeeds, his uncle will relinquish the throne. Jason leads a group of Greek heroes to Colchis, the location of the Golden Fleece. Medea (played by Maria Callas) is the daughter of the king of Colchis and falls in love with Jason, so she steals the Golden Fleece for him. She betrays her father, kills her brother, and is willing to forsake everything to escape with Jason to a distant land to live together. However, ten years later, Jason no longer loves Medea and abandons her and their two sons to marry a princess from another kingdom. Enraged and heartbroken, Medea decides to take revenge on Jason; she uses magic to kill the king and his daughter, and even murders her own two sons…
