On the day of the万寿节 in the first year of Qianlong, Emperor Qianlong hosted a chess match in the Summer Palace and discovered that the true chess master in the Hanlin Academy, Shi Xiangxia, and his senior apprentice, Fan Xiping, were the real experts in the chess world. Qianlong realized that Shi Xiangxia had settled for a draw with him to maintain the dignity of his imperial face, and he wanted to arrange a match between Shi Xiangxia and Fan Xiping to see who was superior. Upon issuing this decree, Qianlong did not expect Fan Xiping to refuse to comply and escape the capital to avoid the imperial court's pursuit, going incognito back to his hometown. While passing through Bianzhou City, a story unfolded. Fan Xiping stayed at the Fengyue Inn in Bianzhou City, but before he could settle down, he noticed a woman attempting to take her own life not far from the inn. He rushed downstairs and saved her, but during the commotion, a thief took advantage of the situation and stole an onyx jade pendant that had been personally bestowed upon him by Emperor Qianlong. At the same time, a mysterious man disguised as a merchant, trailing Fan Xiping, had also been robbed of two hundred taels of silver he carried with him. A jade pendant and two hundred taels of silver sparked suspicion between Fan Xiping and the man who called himself Wu Wenyu. After the suspicions were cleared, Fan Xiping’s jade pendant was returned, but the thief returned to Wu Wenyu only a bag of random stones. Wu Wenyu, left penniless, could only wear a smile around Fan Xiping, who went by the name Qi Wuji. Fan Xiping decided to win some money back for Wu Wenyu at the Wuhu Chess Tower opposite the inn, only for Wu Wenyu to discover that the tower’s owner, Boss Sun, had rigged the games. Wu Wenyu was equally skilled at throwing dice as Boss Sun, and they moved upstairs to battle it out on the chessboard. While Wu Wenyu played chess with Boss Sun, Fan Xiping strolled around the chess tower when a young man, resembling a beggar, insisted on challenging him to a "life and death problem" in chess. Fan Xiping effortlessly defeated the young man, who called himself Sanbao. Sanbao, admitting defeat, insisted on becoming Fan Xiping's disciple. After Sanbao followed him back to the inn and learned that Qi Wuji was actually the renowned chess master Fan Xiping, he revealed his true identity as the top disciple of the Caohang and his mission to track down the thief known as "Sai Shiqian," wanting to form a brotherhood with Fan Xiping. Wu Wenyu and Fan Xiping became sworn brothers, while the cross-dressing Sanbao secretly developed feelings for Fan Xiping. At this point, Boss Sun set up a trap for Fan Xiping. Unaware it was a scheme, Fan Xiping was lured to a secluded paradise where Boss Sun's concubine, Yihong, covered up the onyx jade pendant. Realizing he had fallen into a trap, Fan Xiping decided to enact a scam within a scam to teach Boss Sun a lesson. In Fan Xiping's designed "scam within a scam," Sanbao led Boss Sun to a crushing defeat. After teaching Boss Sun a lesson, Sanbao left a lock of her hair as a token and departed without saying goodbye. Fan Xiping bid farewell to Wu Wenyu and left Bianzhou, missing Sanbao.
