Anna (played by Dana Ivgy) spends her days baking colorful and sweet cupcakes to comfort others, yet she is deeply troubled by her husband's departure. The television is live-streaming the preliminary round of the European Song Contest, and her sister friends gather to watch, not forgetting to cheer and sing along. Unexpectedly, their gay neighbor Ofer (played by Ofer Shechter) secretly sends a clip of their singing to enter the competition. Even more surprising, this choir of gays and housewives ends up being selected as Israel's national team! Ordinary men and women suddenly become the nation's hope; can they truly bring glory to their country? Israeli gay director Itay Tzukrel has always had a fondness for musical themes. Positioned in Asia but culturally often more aligned with Europe, Israel faces fierce competition. The new film "Cupcake" uses the backdrop of the European Song Contest to showcase the laughter and tears, passion and fervor of Israeli life while offering love and care to marginalized groups such as the LGBTQ community and women.
