Arthur (played by Albert Finney) is a twenty-three-year-old young man who is always indignant about the various injustices in society. However, with no outlet for this emotion, he spends all his time in bars. Arthur has been in a physical relationship with the married woman Brenda (played by Rachel Roberts), and while this immoral relationship provides him with excitement, it also leaves him with a guilty conscience.
