Guo Nanhong entered the realm of martial arts films after the wave of interest in this genre was sparked by "Dragon Inn" in Taiwan. Although Guo had spent ten years directing art films, he changed his style to direct the martial arts film "The Era of the Sword King." The film starred Taiwan's top martial arts stars, Tian Peng and Shangguan Lingfeng, and it turned out to be a surprising success. This box office hit made Guo Nanhong the third "million director" in the Hong Kong film market after Zhang Che and Hu Jinquan. The film has also become one of the representative works of Taiwanese Mandarin martial arts cinema. The "Era of the Sword King" is a period costume sword-fighting martial arts film with no clear historical background. In this film, he cast the then newcomer Tian Peng as the male lead. The story revolves around the rivalries among various martial arts sects, and while the plot is rather conventional, the fight choreography is designed based on the style of new wave martial arts like "Dueling Hero," blending northern-style action with Japanese samurai film combat, making it fresh and interesting for audiences.
