The social protests of the late 1960s and the worldwide student rebellions affected not only popular music but even the boys' choir at a Catholic boarding school in far northern Japan. 15-year-old Mich is a new student at this school, who is going through a difficult adjustment period. He is very shy and often stutters, making him an easy target for cruel teasing from his classmates. He manages to befriend his classmate Asu, who has a beautiful soprano voice. With love and care, Yasuo discovers that Mich is considering skipping school, and he convinces him to stay and join the school choir. Everyone is surprised that once Mich begins to sing, his stutter disappears. He quickly gains confidence and falls in love with singing. Choir becomes very important to him. However, school is quite the opposite. When he returns to Tokyo for vacation, he joins demonstrations with many other young students. After returning to school, he fervently spreads revolutionary slogans, and his once crystal-clear voice begins to change. Yasuo's changed voice hinders his speaking to the point where he requests Mich to speak for him. To replace Asu in speaking, Michio manages to completely overcome his stuttering issue. Their past roles are reversed, and Michio now starts to take care of Yasuo. Yasuo's life becomes increasingly difficult. The innocent and peaceful rehearsals of the choir suddenly turn into a breeding ground for social struggles of that era.
