Living cautiously in what was once home, is there still hope here? The devastating seawater completely destroyed Hong Kong, submerging most of the land, leaving only the ruins of high-rise buildings visible above the surface after the water receded. The survivor Asha hides alone among the rubble, needing to remain silent and low-profile while scavenging floating remnants from the water to survive, avoiding threats from both the surface and the depths. The arrival of a little girl, Hei Hei, disrupts Asha's calm life. "The Calm Beyond" is set against the backdrop of Hong Kong and is the debut feature by the late director Joshua Wong, premiering at the 2020 Adelaide Film Festival, receiving high praise for its bold cinematography and CGI techniques. Director Joshua Wong completed filming while fiercely battling cancer and passed away at the end of 2020.
