This film depicts the lives of several farming families in the impoverished rural areas of northern Italy at the end of the 19th century, consisting of many small stories. One segment tells the story of a tenant farmer's son who goes to school. For the people of that time and place, education was a difficult endeavor, as parents did not understand the significance and benefits of education and were reluctant to send their children to school. It was only after repeated encouragement from the priest that parents finally agreed to this. These families also had to significantly economize in their daily lives to support their children's education. When a tenant farmer's child returned from school with damaged shoes, his father cut down a tree and made him a pair of wooden shoes overnight. After the landlord learned of this, he expelled the tenant farmer from their home. The film tells the story of three farmers working for the same landlord, emphasizing the relationships among family members and their neighbors. Italian director Ermanno Olmi skillfully cast several non-professional actors in leading roles over a 12-month period. This film is almost a documentary in its visual style, except that it features actors performing. It is a masterpiece of the "cinema of life" that beautifully recreates the lives of 19th-century Italian tenant farmers. The film won the Palm d'Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival and over a dozen other international film awards, including the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 1979 César Awards, due to its outstanding performances and touching storyline. This film is almost a documentary in its visual style, with the only difference being that it is performed by actors, making it a celebrated work of "cinema of life." It won the Palm d'Or at the 31st Cannes Film Festival.
