Peter Greenaway's 1987 work, nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Production Design at the British Academy Awards; a Cannes Film Festival entry. The director, coming from a painting background, naturally brings a unique and colorful visual style to his works. American architect Stourley Kracklite and his pregnant young wife Louisa arrive in Rome to organize an exhibition in memory of the imaginative 18th-century French architect Etienne-Louis Boullée. However, Kracklite is tormented by a stomach ailment, while Louisa becomes entangled with the charming young architect Caspasian Speckler, the exhibition's sponsor. The film has a special focus on bellies—the sick architect's belly and his wife's pregnant belly, both rounded shapes reminiscent of the dome buildings designed by Boullée…
