The story takes place in a deeply religious village in Denmark, where farmer Bogen has three sons. The eldest son is skeptical of religion and has a rebellious nature; the youngest son unexpectedly falls in love with a girl of a different faith. The main character, the second son among the three, believes he is Jesus and is seen as a madman because, after the devastating loss of his fiancée, he has lost his sanity despite originally studying theology. But one day, the second son begins to "perform miracles," bringing the dead back to life, and his mind starts to recover.
