On the eve of the 1992 Yugoslav War, Serbian engineer Luka (played by Slavko Stimac) camps in the mountains of Bosnia with his opera-obsessed wife, Jadranka (played by Vesna Trivalic), and their son, Miro (played by Vuk Kostic), who dreams of becoming a football player, to build a tourist route. Luka ignores his wife's complaints and the rumors of war, wholly dedicated to the design of the route. Shortly after, war breaks out, Miro enlists, and Jadranka, unable to tolerate rural life, elopes with her lover, leaving a despondent Luka waiting for his wife and son amidst the booming artillery. By chance, Luka saves a Muslim woman, Sabaha (played by Natasa Solak), from soldiers. Originally intending to use her as a bargaining chip for his captured son, Luka gradually develops feelings for Sabaha... This film won the French National Education System Film Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and the Best European Film Award at the 2005 César Awards.
