The story takes place in 19th-century England, where the young Oscar (played by Ralph Fiennes) is a missionary with grand ideals. He embarks on a journey to the Australian outback, ready to establish his career and bring the Lord's blessings to more people. Lucinda (played by Cate Blanchett) grows up in a wealthy family; her carefree life allows her to cherish beautiful dreams and a pure heart. After inheriting her father's glass factory, she is determined to promote women's liberation and self-reliance. On a ship drifting at sea, these two similar yet distinct individuals meet. Both strong-willed and competitive, they make a bet in which Oscar must build a glass church and transport it to the mountainous interior, risking all of Lucinda's fortune. It is this bold and reckless wager that radically changes their fates.
