Edward (Johnny Depp) is a robot with a human mind but has scissors for hands, living alone in a castle. A cosmetics saleswoman named Peg who stumbles upon the castle takes him home, introducing him to the human world. Innocent Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder), who gradually becomes attracted to Edward's kindness. However, a series of unfortunate events lead the neighbors to change their attitude towards Edward from acceptance to rejection. Edward painfully discovers that his good intentions often lead to bad outcomes, and he cannot even embrace his beloved. Perhaps he is destined not to belong in this world.
