The story takes place during World War II, where Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) receives an important mission from the British government to swiftly uncover the truth behind the disappearance of a British spy and the whereabouts of a film to prevent enemies from acquiring classified information. Holmes and his assistant Watson (Nigel Bruce) urgently travel to Washington to conduct an investigation.
