"The Current from Within" tells the surreal story of a married, deeply closeted man by the Peruvian seaside who makes a difficult choice between a conservative environment and the ghost of his beloved male partner. The original title "Contracorriente" literally translates to "Backflow," referring to the shape of waves folding back, reversing, converging, and overlapping as they hit the shore, which metaphorically reflects the tumultuous forbidden love between the protagonist Miguel (Cristian Mercado) and Santiago (Manolo Cardona). Miguel is about to become a father but secretly loves the ghost of the painter Santiago, who drowned. To keep him close, Miguel hides Santiago's body, but this brings an unbearable weight to his life. Ultimately, Miguel's letting go of this relationship redeems Santiago's soul. The film won the World Cinema Audience Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and represented Peru in the race for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Oscars.
