Young John (Paul Newman) is adopted by old Mr. Russell from a POW camp, but as he grows up, he chooses to return to live among the natives, leading a free-spirited life. After Mr. Russell's death, he leaves John a house, which has now become a inn run by Jessie (Diane Cilento). The old man hoped for him to integrate into white society and think in English, but he sells the house, forcing Jessie to go back home. One day, they set off with a doctor couple and Frank (Cameron Mitchell), but encounter an attack by robbers. It turns out that Frank is one of the robbers, and they are seeking the valuables the doctors carry. The robbers destroy their water bags and kidnap the doctor’s wife as a hostage. The doctor, cowardly and timid, does not dare to rescue his wife, who suffers in the extreme heat. Russell decides to risk his life to confront the robbers, and even in unfavorable circumstances, ultimately sacrifices himself to save others, taking down the robbers with him.
